Geotextiles and GeoPot

Geotextile fabrics are strong, synthetic fabrics that are typically made from polypropylene material and used in outdoor applications such as soil and erosion control, drainage maintenance, and more. While geotextiles can be used on their own as a layer of garden fabric beneath soil or mulch, or in the construction of retaining walls and ponds, they are also a key material in fabric pots and raised beds, including GeoPot and GeoPlanter.

Woven vs Non-Woven

There are two main forms of geotextile: woven, and non-woven. Woven fabric is weaved into a uniform piece from yarn, thread, or other fibers, and results in a tight construction and a relatively non-porous material. In contrast, non-woven materials like our geotextile fabric are made up of fibers that are bonded together, typically through heat or needle punching, resulting in fabric that is often lighter and more breathable than woven material.

GeoPot Construction

GeoPot fabric pots are made from non-woven, UV-treated polypropylene geotextile fabric that is chemically stable, inert, and free of BPA and heavy metals. While the stitching and handles aren’t recyclable, the polypropylene fabric is Recyclable #5, and more and more facilities are taking this type of material every day.

Air Root Pruning

The primary advantage of the GeoPot Fabric Pot’s non-woven geotextile fabric is its air root pruning capability. Air root pruning is a process in which the roots reach the air on the outside of the pot and are naturally self-pruned, activating the growth of many fibrous feeder roots. These roots are more productive in the uptake of water and nutrients, resulting in a healthier, more robust plant that utilizes the entire root zone for optimum plant growth.

Improved Aeration

The porous fabric of the GeoPot Fabric Pot allows air to enter the root zone from all surfaces of the container, providing more oxygen for the roots and supporting beneficial microorganisms and bacteria. The available oxygen is essential for the metabolic process in taking up minerals and nutrients. Oxygen is also necessary to diffuse carbon dioxide caused by the respiration of root cells and microorganisms.

Superior Drainage

A common problem with conventional plastic containers, wooden raised beds, and woven geotextile fabric is poor drainage, leading to soil-borne diseases like Phytophthora and Pythium, responsible for devastating root rot. Due to the non-woven fabric used in the construction of the GeoPot and GeoPlanter, excess water can easily drain from the container, keeping moisture at an ideal level for healthy plant growth.

Durability

GeoPot’s UV-treated, non-woven polypropylene geotextile fabric strikes the perfect balance between breathability and durability. With marine-grade thread and a quad-stitched design, GeoPot Fabric Pots can be washed and reused for up to 5 or 6 growing cycles while retaining their self-supporting shape and resisting wear and tear from weather, water, and light. With GeoPot fabric pots, you may need to water more frequently than traditional growing containers due to the improved airflow and drainage.
