Geogrid For Driveways

Designed for use on driveways and roadways, this material is the ideal product for reinforcing paved or gravel driveways. This geogrid is placed below the gravel during construction to limit side-to-side gravel movement and helps support long-term use road use. Many homeowners and construction professionals prefer biaxial geogrid over other types of geogrid because it provides strength in all lateral directions. Geogrid reduces costly maintenance and adds to the longevity of a project. The geogrid is made from durable punched polypropylene plastic and can be easily rolled out for installation. PRODUCT SUMMARY

  • Reinforcement Strength: High tensile modulus properties per ASTM D6637 for base reinforcement applications. For structures with dynamic short-term loadings, Mirafi® BXG geogrids offer high strength at low strain and are designed for maximum bearing capacity and shear resistance.
  • True biaxial strengths: Mirafi ® BXG geogrids are biaxial grids that exhibit high tensile strength in both longitudinal and transverse directions, making them suitable for base course reinforcement and soil stabilization applications.
  • Durability: Superior damage resistance from moderate to severe stress installations.
  • Soil Interaction: Superior soil confinement resulting in greater load distribution. A combination of grid structure and polymers create optimum soil-grid interaction.
  • Seams: Panels can be sewn together in the factory or field, providing cross-roll direction strength to facilitate installation

PRODUCT INFORMATION  – TENCATE MIRAFI BXG GEOGRIDS:

APPLICATIONS Mirafi BXG geogrids deliver strength, long-term performance, reliability and quick installation for base reinforcement for paved roads, construction haul roads, foundation reinforcement, working platforms on weak subgrades, and secondary reinforcement for soil retaining structures. FUNCTIONS Confinement – The ability of a geosynthetic to restrain lateral movement from a soil or aggregate through friction or mechanical interlock. Soil Reinforcement – The synergistic improvement of a total system’s strength created by the introduction of a reinforcing geosynthetic (that is good in tension) into a soil and/or aggregate system (that is good in compression but poor in tension).

Geogrid Installed for Gravel Driveway

Geogrids Used For Driveway Applications

Geogrids fabrics help prevent structural failure through their ability to withstand forces in a variety of applications. Once common application is in driveway construction where utilizing a biaxial driveway georgrid can help retain the structural integrity and long term stability of the surface. One of the means by which we can evaluate a geogrid’s reliability is through its junction. Junction integrity is defined by something called ultimate junction strength. Here is a definition for that term:

Ultimate junction strength – The maximum amount of force a junction can withstand before breaking. The higher the ultimate junction strength, the better the junction integrity. There are two main reasons why triaxial geogrids have great junction integrity:

  • Ribs cross in three directions making for thicker junctions
  • Each rib is made from a very dense polymeric material

These two features help the triaxial geogrid junctions remain intact over time. Biaxial geogrids are geosynthetic materials formed into a grid of integrally connected tensile elements. The grid has apertures of sufficient size to allow “strike-through” and interlocking with surrounding aggregate base materials, commonly rock. Biaxial geogrid increases the stiffness of unbound aggregate base layers and confines the aggregate particles under repetitive loading. Biaxial geogrids must be punched and drawn with polypropylene material and comply with Caltrans’ Standard Specifications for Biaxial Geogrids. The Biaxial geogrid is placed either below or within the aggregate base layer of a pavement structure. The composite section consisting of the geogrid and aggregate base is often referred to as a mechanically stabilized layer (MSL). A schematic of a typical asphalt pavement section enhanced with a biaxial geogrid is shown in Figure 1.

Cross Section of Geogrid Used for Roadway

Biaxial geogrid benefits include:

  • Reduced aggregate base thickness, which may provide immediate cost savings • Increased performance life and reliability of the pavement
  • Improved compaction and uniformity over soft or variable soils
  • Reduced hauling and heavy construction truck traffic on local roads due to relatively less materials required for removal or replacement or backfill
  • Ability to install the product in a wide range of weather conditions Prepared Subgrade Aggregate Base Biaxial Geogrid Hot Mix Asphalt 5
  • Can be used with reclaimed asphalt concrete aggregate base
  • Improved safety due to reduced construction time from reduced hauling and processing of subgrade or backfill materials

Appropriate Application Use

Biaxial geogrids are intended for asphalt or gravel (flexible) surfaces. At this time, there is no known benefit for using biaxial geogrids under concrete pavement. Biaxial geogrids can be used for a variety of project conditions, but it is most cost effective in areas where pavement surface grade and drainage control the pavement structural section. Appropriate applications include:

  • Restricted pavement surface grades due to local drainage or vertical clearance. A biaxial geogrid can provide a thinner section with performance equivalent to a pavement with a thicker aggregate base.
  • Expedited construction is required. The thinner biaxial geogrid section will result in less construction time due to less material being required. In many cases biaxial geogrid also results in less compaction effort.
  • Increased pavement structural capacity and performance life for the same thick pavement section without biaxial geogrid.
  • Soft or weak subgrades are encountered. Biaxial geogrids can reduce or eliminate the amount of materials that need to be removed.
