What is Geotextile Fabric?
Geofabric is a permeable geotextile fabric made from durable polyester fibres. It’s commonly used for civil engineering applications including roads, embankments, stockpiles, plumbing and landscaping drainage, and filtration works. Whenever soil is exposed, it’s at risk of erosion from wind, rainwater, runoff or wave action. Exposed soil left unprotected will cause instability and large amounts of silt runoff; contaminating our waterways, stormwater drains and other sensitive environments.
Geotextile fabrics have the ability to reinforce, filter, drain, separate and protect the soil, which is why they are so frequently used in commercial, domestic and civil engineering projects.
What are the properties of geotextile fabric
There are many properties of geotextiles that are useful in a variety of applications. For use in landscaping and civil engineering projects, geotextiles need a high melting point and UV resistance. These properties prevent geofabrics from degrading over time when they are exposed to the elements. A geotextile fabric also needs to be strong and durable with a high resistance to breaking or tearing. These properties enable them to be used in projects that involve hydro engineering and the construction of embankments, tunnels, dams, ponds, landfills and so on. These fabrics also need to be highly permeable, allowing water to drain freely through the fabric, whilst retaining larger soil particles.
Geotextile Applications
Geofabrics have five basic functions that make them very useful in a variety of industries and applications, particularly construction and civil engineering. These functions are separation, drainage, filtration, reinforcement and protection.
1. Separation
This function is extremely relevant to the construction of roads because the geotextile fabric is used to separate two distinct soils or materials. Separation prevents these soils or materials from intermixing, migrating, sinking or disintegrating into one another. If allowed to mix, the performance of each of these soils or materials would be compromised. As an example, geofabrics can be used to separate fine subgrade soil from aggregates, preserving the drainage and strength of the aggregate material. The fabric prevents the large voids between the aggregate particles from being blocked by the fine subgrade soil particles.
As you can appreciate, the separation function of these geofabrics plays an important role in preventing the mixture of soils and other materials during the construction of roads. This mixing can occur when water enters the soil strata, flushing the soils or aggregate materials together. The separation function relies on the fact that the geotextile fabric is positioned so that it completely separates the two layers. This allows the water to permeate through the finer soil particles and the fabric, whilst preventing the small soil particles filling the gaps between the larger aggregate particles and reducing its drainage capacity. This separation function makes geofabrics very useful for protecting slopes and controlling erosion, separating sub-base layers in road construction, and in coastal protection projects.
2. Drainage
Geotextiles are widely used for drainage in earth and construction projects, as they direct rain, ground water and other fluids to stormwater systems or other drainage collection works. These fabrics are often used to drain excess water from construction sites, not only by filtration, but also by acting as a barrier, promoting lateral flow and routing water in a particular direction within the plane of the geotextile. They are ideal for protecting wetlands and other sensitive ecosystems, as well as stormwater systems from contaminated water. Geotextiles are also used to line landfills, preventing dangerous substances contaminating the surrounding soil, and deter mud and silt from blocking drainage systems.
A geotextile fabric is also very useful in landscaping projects as they can prevent a build-up of water behind retaining walls, and direct surface water away from footpaths, sporting fields and other areas that are sensitive to erosion. They are often used to prevent earth embankments being eroded by wave action, currents or repeated drawdowns, as well as to prevent soil contamination from septic systems. They are used extensively in both commercial and domestic landscaping projects, specifically because of their drainage properties and their ability to prevent erosion and divert water away from sensitive areas.
3. Filtration
Geofabrics prevent the movement, migration or loss of soil particles, allowing the free flow of rainwater, runoff or groundwater through the soil. They are used in road works, coastal protection projects and in construction sites to prevent soil erosion, while allowing water to freely drain into stormwater systems or other drainage collection points. Movement of these soil particles often reduces the load capacity of the site, so preventing their movement, whilst allowing water to drain away, maintains the integrity of the site.
A geotextile fabric can also be used to promote lateral water flow, dissipating the kinetic energy of rising groundwater in both construction sites and landscaping projects. For example, they are frequently used to increase filtration and reduce erosion. Areas where this is important include on slopes, dam embankments and spillways, as well as shorelines, pavement edge drains, French drains and leachate collection systems. They can be used in both horizontal and vertical applications and are very useful in solving drainage problems in residential and commercial projects. Geofabrics can also prevent drains from being clogged by mud and other materials, as well as aid the drainage of subsoils.
4. Reinforcement
Geotextile fabrics are often used to increase the structural stability of the soil by holding the soil in place and preventing it from being eroded. Their action is similar to rebar in concrete, where the tensile strength of concrete is increased by using rebar throughout the slab. This reinforcement allows roads or embankments to be built on very weak soils, as the integrity of the soil, its tensile strength and load bearing capacity are all reinforced by the geofabric material. They are also used to prevent steep soil walls or natural slopes from collapsing in commercial, domestic and civil engineering projects, as well as in building very high retaining walls.
5. Protection
Some of the most common applications of geotextile fabrics are in landfills, dams, ponds, tailings dams and tunnels where waterproof membranes need to be protected from damage. This damage can be caused by fill materials and the loads that are applied to these membranes from above. The fabrics are placed between the waterproof membrane and the fill or other materials (soils, aggregates, etc.,), distributing any local pressure from the above layer and protecting the membrane from damage. Protection of membrane layers is one of the prime functions of a geotextile fabric in many civil engineering projects. Read More
