Using landscape fabric is a straightforward and often highly effective approach to combatting weeds. It serves to hinder the germination of weed seeds in the soil and prevents them from taking root if they land on top of the soil. Notably, landscape fabric allows water, air, and some nutrients to permeate the soil, nourishing desirable plants, thanks to its breathable nature.

While landscape fabric can function adequately on its own, it is generally advisable to cover it with decorative mulch, rocks, or alternative ground cover materials. By doing so, the fabric acts as a protective barrier, separating the cover material from the soil. This preserves the cleanliness of stones and gravel and slows down the natural decomposition process of organic mulch. Comparatively, black plastic (another type of weed barrier) serves a similar purpose, but it is prone to tearing and forms an impermeable barrier, obstructing water and air from reaching desirable plants.

Is landscape fabric worth using?

If used properly and in the best situations, landscaping fabric does have its benefits, but it also has its drawbacks. The good: Landscape fabric works for a time in reducing weeds in an area. It generally works as a weed barrier for a year or less before its usefulness starts declining.

What is the garden sheet that stops weeds?

What is a weed membrane? A weed membrane fabric is a cover or sheet that can be laid on top of the soil that is beneath your decorative gravel, slate or stone chippings. It blocks the emergence of weeds growing and becoming visible within the gravel surface.

Do you put landscape fabric over or under gravel?

Should landscape fabric go under gravel? Yes. Putting landscape fabric under gravel isn’t a requirement, but it is recommended. When used under gravel, it provides all the positives of weed control and added stability, without any of the negatives.

What membrane stops weeds coming through?

Weed membrane’s primary purpose is to keep weeds at bay and is useful for using under any patio, gravel beds or outdoor structures, that needs to stay free of weeds. Weed control fabric is designed to let water pass through the membrane to ensure soil still receives the nutrients it requires.
