What is Geogrids – Geofantex

Geogrid is a major geosynthetic material. Compared with other geosynthetics, it has unique performance and efficacy. It is often used as the reinforcement of reinforced soil structure or the reinforcement of composite materials.
Geogrid is divided into four categories: plastic geogrid, steel plastic geogrid, glass fiber geogrid and warp-knitted polyester geogrid. Geofantex mainly produces three products: plastic geogrid, fiberglass grid and polyester warp-knitted polyester grid. The grid is a two-dimensional grid or a three-dimensional grid screen with a certain height, which is made of polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride and other high molecular polymers through thermoplastic or molding. When used in civil engineering, it is called geogrid.

Plastic geogrid is a square or rectangular polymer mesh formed by stretching. According to the different stretching directions during manufacture, it can be unidirectional stretching and bidirectional stretching. It punches holes on polymer sheets (mostly polypropylene or high-density polyethylene) produced by extrusion and then performs directional stretching under heating conditions. The unidirectional stretch grid is only stretched along the length of the sheet, while the bidirectional stretch grid is made by continuing to stretch the unidirectional stretched grid in the direction perpendicular to its length.

Basic characteristics of plastic geogrid

  1. Mechanical properties: Due to the directional stretching during the manufacturing process, the polymer molecules are aligned along the stretching direction, which strengthens the connection force between molecular chains and greatly improves its tensile strength, even stronger than mild steel. It is still large, but the elongation is small. The interlocking force of soil and rock materials in the grid is increased, and the friction coefficient between them is also significantly increased.
  2. Temperature resistance performance: Due to the stretching effect, its high-temperature resistance performance is also improved.
  3. Durability: Due to the addition of aging materials such as carbon black in the geogrid, it has good durability such as acid resistance, alkali resistance, corrosion resistance, and aging resistance.
  4. Construction performance: The geogrid is light in weight, and has a strong bite force with soil or gravel; it is resistant to acid and alkali, corrosion, and aging; it is flexible and easy to construct. The plastic geogrid is a flat plastic mesh material with a certain degree of flexibility, which is easy to cut and connect on site (it can be connected by polyethylene rope or connecting rod), and can also be overlapped, which is convenient for on-site assembly into the required shape and folded during the construction process. The impact of the curve is small, the construction is simple, and no special construction machinery and professional technicians are required.

The Uniaxial and Biaxial applications of plastic geogrid are as follows:

  1. Uniaxial geogrid is suitable for highway and railway subgrade, embankment, side slope reinforcement, various retaining wall reinforcement, river and sea dam reinforcement, yard reinforcement, bridge abutment reinforcement, and shallower foundation reinforcement. It is widely used in various reinforced retaining walls.
  2. Biaxial grid is suitable for road and railway subgrade, embankment reinforcement, shallow foundation reinforcement, large squares, car yards, wharf yards, storage yards, and other permanent bearing foundation reinforcements, river roadbed reinforcements, prevention of reflective cracks on asphalt concrete pavements, etc. . It is widely used in the subgrade, embankment reinforcement, and shallow foundation reinforcement.

The fiberglass geogrid is a mesh structure material made of fiberglass and a certain weaving process. In order to protect the fiberglass and improve the overall performance, it is a geocomposite material made by a special coating process. The main components of glass fiber are: silicon oxide, an inorganic material, its physical and chemical properties are extremely stable, and have high strength, high modulus, high wear resistance and excellent cold resistance, no long-term creep; thermal stability Good performance; the net structure enables the aggregate to be locked and restricted; it improves the load-bearing capacity of the asphalt mixture. Because the surface is coated with special modified asphalt, it has double compound performance, which greatly improves the abrasion resistance and shearing ability of the geogrid.

Engineering performance of fiberglass geogrid

  1. The tensile strength is extremely high, and the elongation is very low; the tensile strength can reach 100 kN/m, and the elongation at break is about 3%.
  2. There is no long-term creep; the fiberglass geogrid does not creep, which ensures that the product can be used for a long time.
  3. High-temperature stability: The fiberglass geogrid has a melting point above 1,000°C, and it will not be affected by hot-laid asphalt concrete at 160°C.
  4. It has good compatibility with pavement mixture: the fiberglass geogrid has good compatibility with the organic matter of the concrete mixture after the surface organic coating treatment, especially the asphalt material, thereby improving the fiberglass disadvantages of not being abrasion-resistant and folding-resistant.
  5. Chemical stability: After special treatment, the fiberglass can prevent all kinds of chemical erosion, and resist biological erosion and climate change.
  6. Interlocking and restraining function: Asphalt concrete mixture passes through the fiberglass geogrid structure to form a composite interlocking structure. This restriction can prevent the movement of the concrete mixture, so that the asphalt concrete mixture can be better compacted, obtain greater bearing capacity, and can improve the load transfer capacity, reduce deformation, and strengthen the asphalt concrete pavement. Turn it into a whole structure, just like adding steel bars to concrete, it has good structural strength and acts as a skeleton in the road overlay.

The scope of application of fiberglass Geogrid

Fiberglass Geogrid is suitable for occasions where the deformation of asphalt concrete pavement is not very large, such as the prevention of pavement reflection cracks and the connection of new and old pavements. When the glass fiber grid is used on asphalt roads, the functions of anti-fatigue cracking, resistance to low-temperature shrinkage, resistance to high-temperature rutting, and delaying reflection cracks are played.

Polyester fiber warp-knitted geogrid selects high-strength polyester fiber as raw material. Adopting the warp-knitting directional structure, the warp and weft yarns in the fabric have no bending state between each other, and the intersections are bound with high-strength fiber filaments to form a firm bonding point, giving full play to its mechanical properties, high-strength polyester fiber warp-knitting geogrid The grid has high tensile strength, small extension force, high tear strength, small vertical and horizontal strength difference, ultraviolet ray aging resistance, abrasion resistance, corrosion resistance, the lightweight, strong interlocking force with soil or gravel, which is good for strengthening soil Shear resistance and reinforcement improve the integrity and load capacity of the soil, which has a significant effect.
