Case Studies

Mirafi 140N – Livermore, CA

TenCate’s goal is to create materials that enhance performance, reduce costs, and provide optimal results for construction projects.

  • The Objective: For over 20 years, the Hanson Aggregates Quarry in Livermore, California, supplied gravel and rock to the surrounding areas. As the quarry was slated for future wetlands and groundwater recharging, the owner needed to restore the area to its original condition. This massive project involved filling thousands of cubic yards of soil, including a 40-foot high slope and a sedimentation pond, necessitating reinforcement and proper drainage for global stability.
  • The Designing Process: Designing the slope involved compacted engineered fill for drainage and reinforcement to prevent soil loss. Mirafi G200N and Mirafi 140N were used for drainage, with G200N intercepting groundwater and preventing fill saturation. G200N was installed as a continuous piece forming a chimney drain, while 140N served as an absorbent separator geotextile around the drain rock. Mirafi Miragrid 2XT was placed every two vertical feet for slope stability, with a temporary erosion blanket for protection.
  • Construction: The contractor successfully completed the project with no issues in geosynthetic placement. Miragrid 2XT’s flexibility simplified the installation of surface reinforcement. Mirafi G200N’s continuous unrolling eliminated the need for placing rocks at every lift.

Mirafi 140N – Palm Desert, CA

  • The Objective: The Living Desert Zoo & Gardens in Palm Desert, CA, needed a new parking lot that blended with the natural surroundings, was durable, environmentally friendly, and could handle water run-off from storms.
  • The Designing Process: The Infiltrastone paving system was selected to manage stormwater, removing contaminants and improving water quality. Mirafi® 140N was used as a separator between aggregate layers to prevent the bedding material from seeping into the larger aggregate below. The project avoided petroleum-based products and included the Pavestone Anchor Diamond Pro wall system, reinforced with Miragrid® 3XT and 5XT.
  • Construction: The parking lot’s structural areas included an 8-inch layer of crushed granite on the compacted subgrade, with Mirafi® 140N installed over the aggregate before placing the 2-inch gap-graded #6 granite bedding layer.
