Concrete Blanket Overview

A Concrete Blanket is a concrete-filled geosynthetic composite that hardens after hydration to form a durable protective layer. It consists of polyethylene and polypropylene fiber reinforcement, a dry cementitious core, and a waterproof backing layer that helps prevent water infiltration.

Unlike conventional concrete construction, the material arrives ready for installation and requires only hydration to achieve its final strength. This significantly reduces labor requirements, equipment needs, and construction time while maintaining reliable structural performance.

How Does a Concrete Blanket Work?

The system is supplied in roll form and can be deployed directly onto prepared surfaces. Once positioned, water is applied to activate the cementitious material contained within the composite structure.

After curing, the Concrete Blanket transforms into a hardened concrete layer that conforms to the underlying terrain. Its reinforced internal structure improves crack resistance and tensile performance, making it suitable for demanding environmental conditions.

The integrated HDPE backing layer provides impermeability, helping protect soil and infrastructure from water infiltration while maintaining long-term durability.

Key Benefits of Concrete Blanket Installation

Fast Construction and Reduced Labor

One of the primary advantages of a Concrete Blanket is its rapid installation process. Traditional concrete works often require formwork, mixing equipment, and extensive labor. In contrast, concrete-filled geosynthetic systems can be deployed quickly, reducing project schedules and minimizing site disruption.

Excellent Erosion Control Performance

Concrete blanket systems are widely used in erosion-prone areas because they create a protective surface capable of resisting flowing water and environmental wear. Their durability makes them particularly effective in drainage channels, embankments, and coastal protection projects.

Flexible Before Hydration, Durable After Curing

The material remains flexible during installation, allowing it to adapt to irregular surfaces, slopes, and complex geometries. Once cured, it forms a robust concrete layer that delivers long-term performance in both temporary and permanent applications.

Waterproof and Environmentally Resistant

The waterproof backing layer helps control seepage and improve hydraulic performance. Combined with fiber reinforcement, it provides resistance to weathering, freeze-thaw cycles, and mechanical stress.

Applications of Concrete Blanket in Engineering Projects

Slope Protection and Stabilization

A Concrete Blanket is frequently used for slope stabilization where erosion, runoff, or soil movement pose risks to infrastructure. The hardened surface protects exposed ground while helping maintain slope integrity over time.

Channel Lining and Drainage Systems

Concrete blanket lining systems provide an efficient solution for channels, ditches, and drainage networks. Their impermeable structure reduces water loss while protecting against scouring and erosion caused by continuous flow.

Shoreline and Riverbank Protection

In coastal engineering and river management projects, concrete-filled geosynthetic blankets help protect shorelines and riverbanks from erosion. Their ability to conform to uneven terrain ensures effective coverage and reliable performance.

Environmental and Industrial Applications

These materials are also used in landfill covers, waste containment facilities, and wastewater treatment infrastructure. The combination of impermeability and durability makes them suitable for projects requiring long-term environmental protection.

Geofantex Geosynthetics have to make a series of guarantee for our products both plant processing and selling out to our customers. The selling to you is the first step, the service and guarantee is our task. Geofantex Geosynthetics have an ISO Certificate to guarantee the raw material, the product processing, and the end product. From receiving your order to replacement and installation of the products, we have solved the problems in time if you need, whatever the quality and technics guideline or suggestions. Our company has been committed to supplying high-quality products with reasonable price and delivery in time.

GEOFANTEX has an on-site Manufacturing Quality Assurance Laboratory at the factory. GEOFANTEX maintains a high level of quality and up-to-the-minute results on finished products through a fully equipped, well-staffed, dedicated laboratory existing in each of the manufacturing facilities. Each facility follows the same guidelines for evaluating the quality of GEOFANTEX products and is capable of adapting to market-driven requirements.
A. Objective
The objective of the GEOFANTEX Quality Assurance program is to define the implementation of basic manufacturing quality assurance (MQA) procedures necessary to ensure the consistent production of quality products supplied to the geosynthetic market. Note that at this time, these procedures are limited to Concrete Blanket.
B. Scope
In order to achieve GEOFANTEX’s stated purpose, a rigorous set of minimum standards and an effective test program to assure compliance have been established. These procedures and requirements are frequently reviewed and adjusted to assure compliance with current market demands and/or predetermined project specifications. These procedures assure that raw materials and process parameters are controlled to provide products complying with GEOFANTEX’s pre-defined minimum characteristics.

Concrete Blanket PRODUCT IDENTIFICATION AND DOCUMENTATION

A. Roll Numbering

Each roll of Concrete Blanket is assigned a unique roll number. The Quality Assurance Laboratory maintains records documenting the raw materials and resulting product quality information.

B. Approval Procedure

Results for each tested roll of the product are checked against both GEOFANTEX China standard and customer specifications for compliance. The Quality Assurance Laboratory approves those materials that meet these requirements for shipment.

C. Non-Conformance

Material that does not meet GEOFANTEX minimum standards is given a roll number but is rejected and not placed into inventory. The material is identified as scrap and will not be utilized. Material that meets GEOFANTEX minimum standards but does not meet a stricter customer specification is not allocated to that customer but is placed into inventory as GEOFANTEX standard material.

D. Documentation

Individual Quality Assurance Certificates are generated and supplied for each roll of Concrete Blanket product to include all relevant quality assurance information about the material(s).

General Installation Guidelines

Concrete Blanket is a new building material that combines the flexibility of textiles with the strength of cement, making it suitable for a variety of construction sites. The following describes its construction methods.

Step 1: Surveying and Setting Out

Determine the location and direction of the canal through measurement and precise marking, providing accurate positioning for subsequent canal base cleaning and cement blanket laying, ensuring that canal construction meets design requirements.

Step 2: Channel Base Cleaning

Remove debris and loose soil from the canal base to ensure a solid and level foundation. Compact or replace any substandard areas to create a stable foundation for cement blanket laying, preventing foundation problems from impacting canal quality later.

Step 3: Concrete Blanket Preparation

Cut the cement blanket to the canal dimensions (allowing a 10-15 cm overlap). Prepare clean water and spraying equipment, and prepare materials and tools in advance to ensure smooth laying.

Step 4: Concrete Blanket Laying (Starting Upstream)

Starting from the upstream side of the canal, roll the cement blanket along the canal base, ensuring a smooth and level foundation and eliminating twists and wrinkles. This ensures a stable overall canal structure and subsequent overlaps.

Step 5: Overlapping, securing, and water spraying

After laying each section of cement blanket, overlap adjacent sections and secure them with U-shaped nails or sandbags (to ensure a tight connection). Simultaneously, use a sprayer to evenly wet the blanket with water as you lay it to activate the cement setting reaction, ensuring both connection stability and initial setting.

Step 6: Curing and curing:

Wait for the cement blanket to fully harden. During this period, no personnel or machinery is allowed to operate on it to prevent external forces from interfering with the setting process. This ensures that the blanket reaches its designed strength and guarantees the final quality of the channel.
