What is a geotextile membrane?

A geotextile membrane is a construction product used in ground and drainage projects. It has many properties that help with stabilisation, filtration, separation, weed suppression and is a necessary addition to French drains and Soakaway systems.

What is geotextile membrane made of?

Geotextiles are made with synthetic fibres – polypropylene. These fibres are then either needle punched for a non-woven fabric or made into tapes and woven together for the woven type geotextile.

What is GSM in geotextile fabric?

GSM stands for grams per square metre. The fabrics weight essentially so there are heavier and lighter options that suit different project specifications.

What is the use of geotextile membrane?

Non-woven membranes are perfect for stabilisation, filtration and drainage uses e.g., soakaways.

Woven membranes are great for higher load applications for stabilisation, reinforcement.

Is geotextile fabric necessary?

Geotextile membrane is needed if you want your project to last well into the future.

For example, if you need geotextile under a patio, its multifunctional nature is helping with weed suppression, stabilisation of lower subbase layers and also helping with drainage of water from the patio surface into the ground.

It is a crucial part in the patio construction.

What is the difference between types of geotextile fabric?

Woven

A fabric made of plastic tapes woven together to make a strong and durable membrane. It is used for reinforcement, stabilisation, and separation layers. This type of membrane has a high load capacity and is used in road and high traffic situations. Woven geotextile has low permeability and cannot be used for filtration. This fabric is usually a black colour. It can also be found in orange as a warning layer for contaminated soils.

Geotextile membrane comes in 2 main types.

Non-Woven

A fabric created with heat bonding and needle punching PP (polypropylene) fibres. This fabric is usually white/off white in colour and is your go to for filtration and stabilisation layers. Non-woven geotextile membrane is a lower load product and is used for example patios and areas of foot traffic. Non-woven fabric can also be sourced in higher GSM (grams per square metre) weights depending on the type of project you’re undertaking.
