The 4 oz non-woven geotextile fabric is a heavy-duty fabric that will act as a separation layer between rock and soil while still allowing water to pass through. These needle-punched non-woven fabrics are non-biodegradable, tear resistant and are permeable with varying water flow rates. Common applications include drainage systems, as a separation layer under rip-rap or in soil erosion prevention projects. Available in thicknesses ranging from 4 oz – 16 oz.

4 oz Non-Woven Geotextile Fabrics
Non-woven fabrics are used for reinforcement, filtration, separation, and erosion control. These fabrics are long-lasting in various conditions. The heavier fabrics are the most resilient to tearing while the lighter fabrics are able to flow water faster. Polypropylene staple fibers offer high water flow rates and are perfect for a number of drainage applications. Outside of drainage, non-woven fabrics can be used as an underlayment for road stabilization. When used for drainage applications, non-woven geotextile fabrics provide excellent filtration characteristics for preventing dirt and aggregate from clogging drainage systems which will help to increase the system’s life and improve its performance. For other applications, non-woven fabrics are used under walkways, landscapes, patios, various water applications, under riprap to redirect excess water, erosion control, retaining walls, and the protection of shorelines. The thinner, lightweight fabrics are used for drainage while the thicker fabrics are used for erosion control or stabilization. The 4 oz non-woven geotextile is a lighter fabric that is perfect for general drainage. Consult with an engineer or landscape architect to find the right fabric for your project.
Nonwoven Geotextiles
Nonwoven geotextiles are made using synthetic textiles. They have an irregular structure that is produced by interlocking the fibers. Woven and nonwoven are used in similar ways which can be confusing. The best way to know the difference between the two is their physical characteristics. Nonwoven geotextiles look and feel like felt with a fuzzy texture to the material. While there are several different ways to manufacture nonwoven geotextile, the most common practice is known as needle-punched. This process is performed by taking a number of fibers and then taking a barbed needle to interlace the fibers together. Nonwoven geotextiles are commonly used for separation along with filtration and drainage when applied to civil applications. Knowing the difference between nonwoven and woven geotextiles can be a challenge when reading the specifications. To simplify it, woven geotextile has a higher strength value while nonwoven offers a higher flow rate. To better understand the differences between the two is starting with elongation. The elongation of nonwoven is greater than 50% while woven is only 5 to 25%. While there is a difference between their elongation, their tensile strengths are very similar as they are both manufactured from similar materials. It’s important to choose the correct kind of geotextile for your project, so consult with someone who can help you choose the right product for a specific application.

The Weight of Nonwoven Geotextiles
Weight is an important aspect between the two. The weight of woven geotextile never comes into play because this product is normally used for separation and reinforcement and therefore does not rely on weight. On the other hand, the weight of a nonwoven geotextile is usually noted. Nonwoven geotextiles have been measured by weight which means the finished product (for example) would be 4 oz per square yard. Other specifications include strength, puncture, etc but are still related to its weight. The growing popularity of geotextiles is influenced by the manufacturing process which has also changed. Most nonwoven geotextiles are made with a lighter weight and still achieve the same strength which has led to reduced costs. There are some exceptions including the use of nonwoven as cushion geotextiles under geomembranes. In cases like that, puncture, weight, and thickness are more important than strength.
